This booklet explains how to reference your work correctly with easy to follow examples. This may be useful for report writing as part of the competition entry.
The intention of sharing case-studies is to add to the knowledge bank of students and share examples from across the world unlike giving references to inform individual design proposals.

Where to check the specifications, dates and other queries regarding the competition?
- All important dates for the competition are mentioned in the competition brief. Download the International Design Competition brief.
- Other queries will be answered on this comments page and visible to all members of NASA.
- Relevant case-studies and references have been uploaded on this webpage in the coming weeks.
Can colleges submit more than one entry?
No. Only one entry per college with a maximum of 4 team members is allowed. Kindly coordinate with respective college/university representatives to register one entry per college.
Note that students from all years can work on the competition.
What is the medium of presentation to be followed? Computer generated or hand-skills?
- The medium and presentation of graphics is entirely up to the participants.
- Panel entries must be digitised and suitable to upload online.
- Participants should be able to reproduce these (through printing digitised entries) for exhibitions.
Do we have to plan a city or renovate an existing locality?
We don’t expect students to plan an entire city. We advise them to narrow down on an area of a city/town with environmental stresses. The proposal depends entirely on the environmental stress in concern and ways of addressing it. This doesn’t imply futuristic architecture for an entire city but innovative and creative solutions for a particular locality are encouraged.
Note that the scale of the drawings will depend on the scale of the study area. This is more applicable to micro level solutions. We don’t expect highly technical drawings for macro level solutions.
What do micro-level solutions mean?
Micro level solutions are solutions at a smaller scale e.g. a typical unit/ building/ typlogy/ infrastructure or utility systems within a small group of housing. These are examples only and students must make their own interpretations and appropriate micro level solutions. Further details on how micro level solutions should fit into the wider proposal are part of the competition brief.
What do you mean by “Interdisciplinary Learning that goes beyond architecture”?
Interdisciplinary learning in the context of the competition is demonstrating knowledge of fields related to architecture. This includes fields such as planning, urban design, infrastructure and transport planning etc. Students are encouraged to demonstrate this knowledge as part of their proposals.
What do you mean by “three images of the scheme must be the part of this report”?
The report is a supporting document for the panels. In order to put the design proposals into context as part of the report, we would like students to add 3 images/drawings/ illustrations in the report that best describe their proposal.
What do you mean by “the submission must be compiled in 2 A1 panels along with an A4 size report not exceeding 10mb IN TOTAL”?
As mentioned in the brief, the compiled entry should not be more than 10MB. This includes 2 A1 panel and the report. The panels and report both have to be in .pdf format, images of which can be flattened and optimized.
We recognize that while it is perfectly possible to compose high-resolution panels within this limit in certain softwares, it might limit the options of students opting to work in their preferred graphic programmes. Hence, we are reducing the resolution of the panels to 150 dpi.
It must be noted that short-listed entries should be able to reproduce higher resolution panels if and when required for other exhibitions.
Still have a doubt? Ask us a question. We will help you out!

University of Westminster encourages students to use the ‘Learning Platform’ to share their comments, questions and thoughts related to the International Design Competition 2012. We will do our best to address your queries. To keep this dialogue ongoing, we will be sharing case-studies and reference documents on this webpage in the coming weeks.
We wish you all good luck!

The Uow Competition is a collaborative effort of NASA and the University of Westminster, London. Hence the competition within this particular timeframe is open to registered NASA colleges only. Colleges from abroad are often invited to attend the NASA conventions. The intention is to extend this competition to these colleges as well.

Question 1 : PG no 10 – submission format – There is a sentence which says
“the submission must be compiled in 2 A1 panels along with an A4 size report not exceeding 10mb IN TOTAL” …. We were wondering if 10mb in total was just for the report or report + sheets. And it is also mentioned that the panels should have a resolution of not less than 300dpi, please enlighten us as to how a 300dpi file could be less than 10mb if it is required to be so.
Question 2: PG no 8 – output
It also says that the report should not exceed 1000 words? Is it so as 1000 words seems to be very less for a REPORT
Question 1 : PG no 10 – submission
As mentioned in the brief, the compiled entry should not be more than 10MB. This includes 2 A1 panel and the report. The panels and report both have to be in .pdf format, images of which can be flattened and optimized.
We recognize that while it is perfectly possible to compose high-resolution panels within this limit in certain softwares, it might limit the options of students opting to work in their preferred graphic programmes. Hence, we are reducing the resolution of the panels to 150 dpi.
It must be noted that short-listed entries should be able to reproduce higher resolution panels if and when required for other exhibitions.
Question 2: PG no 8 – output
The report is a supporting document to the panel entries. The report format is intended to test the ability of the students to express the content of their entries in a succinct manner.
We confirm that number of words for the report is restricted to 1000 only.
Hello,
Is it necessary to mention the referrences for the work in the two A1 panels also (as in for the images or text taken from ebooks and websites) or just mentioning them in the report will be sufficient?
All the references related to the panels and report should be included in the report itself.
Additional titles and references to images/ quotes/ text in the panels may be added and this decision is left to the participants.
Its been mentioned in the brief that “each panel must display the logo of NASA and University of Westminster as per specifications”.
what are the specifications? and where can one find the logos?
The logo of NASA India can be downloaded at http://nasaindia.info/downloads/
Hello,
Has the submission date been postponed? The deadline as mentioned in the brief was 28th sept (friday) but according to the coundown clock in the website it is on 30th sept (sunday). Could you please confirm the deadline.
Also do tell us the source for downloading the Westminster logo guidelines.
The competition deadline is now set in accordance to information put up on the website.
Each participating institute will receive an email to
- confirm this revised submission deadline
- will have logos and specifications attached with the email
- will have more details about uploading submissions
All the information will also be available through the NASA website.
What are the specifications for the entry? Since no code has been given to the colleges participating, do we put in the college code provided by nasa? And does any border need to be put in as well in the sheets?
what are the instructions regarding submission date and guidelines?
Please send the logo guidelines to aravindraja619@gmail.com because i can’t access my offcial mail id (z613@nasaindia.info).
