Frequently Asked Questions

Where to check the specifications, dates and other queries regarding the competition?

- All important dates for the competition are mentioned in the competition brief. Download the International Design Competition brief.
- Other queries will be answered on this comments page and visible to all members of NASA.
- Relevant case-studies and references have been uploaded on this webpage in the coming weeks.

Can colleges submit more than one entry?

No. Only one entry per college with a maximum of 4 team members is allowed. Kindly coordinate with respective college/university representatives to register one entry per college.

Note that students from all years can work on the competition.

What is the medium of presentation to be followed? Computer generated or hand-skills?

- The medium and presentation of graphics is entirely up to the participants.
- Panel entries must be digitised and suitable to upload online.
- Participants should be able to reproduce these (through printing digitised entries) for exhibitions.

Do we have to plan a city or renovate an existing locality?

We don’t expect students to plan an entire city. We advise them to narrow down on an area of a city/town with environmental stresses. The proposal depends entirely on the environmental stress in concern and ways of addressing it. This doesn’t imply futuristic architecture for an entire city but innovative and creative solutions for a particular locality are encouraged.

Note that the scale of the drawings will depend on the scale of the study area. This is more applicable to micro level solutions. We don’t expect highly technical drawings for macro level solutions.

What do micro-level solutions mean?

Micro level solutions are solutions at a smaller scale e.g. a typical unit/ building/ typlogy/ infrastructure or utility systems within a small group of housing. These are examples only and students must make their own interpretations and appropriate micro level solutions. Further details on how micro level solutions should fit into the wider proposal are part of the competition brief.

What do you mean by “Interdisciplinary Learning that goes beyond architecture”?

Interdisciplinary learning in the context of the competition is demonstrating knowledge of fields related to architecture. This includes fields such as planning, urban design, infrastructure and transport planning etc. Students are encouraged to demonstrate this knowledge as part of their proposals.

What do you mean by “three images of the scheme must be the part of this report”?

The report is a supporting document for the panels. In order to put the design proposals into context as part of the report, we would like students to add 3 images/drawings/ illustrations in the report that best describe their proposal.

What do you mean by “the submission must be compiled in 2 A1 panels along with an A4 size report not exceeding 10mb IN TOTAL”?

As mentioned in the brief, the compiled entry should not be more than 10MB. This includes 2 A1 panel and the report. The panels and report both have to be in .pdf format, images of which can be flattened and optimized.

We recognize that while it is perfectly possible to compose high-resolution panels within this limit in certain softwares, it might limit the options of students opting to work in their preferred graphic programmes. Hence, we are reducing the resolution of the panels to 150 dpi.

It must be noted that short-listed entries should be able to reproduce higher resolution panels if and when required for other exhibitions.

Still have a doubt? Ask us a question. We will help you out!

Question 1 : PG no 10 – submission format – There is a sentence which says
“the submission must be compiled in 2 A1 panels along with an A4 size report not exceeding 10mb IN TOTAL” …. We were wondering if 10mb in total was just for the report or report + sheets. And it is also mentioned that the panels should have a resolution of not less than 300dpi, please enlighten us as to how a 300dpi file could be less than 10mb if it is required to be so.

    Question 2: PG no 8 – output
It also says that the report should not exceed 1000 words? Is it so as 1000 words seems to be very less for a REPORT

    • University of Westminster

      Question 1 : PG no 10 – submission

      Question 2: PG no 8 – output

The report is a supporting document to the panel entries. The report format is intended to test the ability of the students to express the content of their entries in a succinct manner.
We confirm that number of words for the report is restricted to 1000 only.

  15. Pramod Kumar

    Hello,
Is it necessary to mention the referrences for the work in the two A1 panels also (as in for the images or text taken from ebooks and websites) or just mentioning them in the report will be sufficient?

    • University of Westminster

All the references related to the panels and report should be included in the report itself.

Additional titles and references to images/ quotes/ text in the panels may be added and this decision is left to the participants.

  16. Rachana Dhanraj

Its been mentioned in the brief that “each panel must display the logo of NASA and University of Westminster as per specifications”.
what are the specifications? and where can one find the logos?
